Spring Into Safety
As we all get our pools and kids ready for swim season we need to look at the safety of the pool. Let’s Spring into Safety! We need to keep up on codes for safety in pools. The newer pools are all built with that in mind, but if you have an older pool then you may have old code standards. You may ask why do we have new codes to the industry. The biggest reason for one newer one is the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act (VGBA). This has been around since 2008, but as with all things products do change to make them even safer. The main drain covers are the key fact. They have changed at least 3 times since this act has come out. These cover make it so that a child or in some cases adult can not be sucked onto the drain and become trapped under water.
Some pools are now made with two main drains and even ones on the side of a pool wall. These are to assure that there are multiple locations that water is being sucked through to make it less likely to have a person sucked to one. Even with this set up you still would want to have the proper covers to be safe.
You will also want to make sure that if you have a dedicated suction line for a pool cleaner that a vac lock is in place. The way the vac lock works is that it holds the hose into the wall. If the hose comes out for some reason there is a door that shuts tight and is not easily opened unless the pool is off.
We want to make sure that everyone is safe going into the summer season here in Florida. Making sure that all of our customers have the knowledge and that we make sure their pools are up to date and as safe as they can be pertaining to this issue. If you have a question as to if your pool has the latest cover for code and safety please feel free to ask for advice.
